ESRI
ESRI (pronounced either EZZ-ree or EE-ESS-AHR-EYE (Preferred by the corporation - this is not true.)) abbreviates the name of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc., an organization based in Redlands, California which produces GIS software. They are probably the biggest manufacturers and sellers of GIS in the world with large offices in both the US and UK and smaller offices elsewhere.
Their server product targeted at Internet applications is called ArcIMS, and their main GIS is called ArcGIS. Predating this their desktop product was ArcView and commandline product ArcINFO, both names which survive as differing levels of
