Erich Koch

Erich Koch, born June 19, 1896, died November 12, 1986.

German Nazi official, German soldier during the World War One, clerk thereafter, member of NSDAP since 1922. Gauleiter of East Prussia since 1928. Administrator of Nazi occupied Ukraine between 1941-1944. Responsible for war crimes. Escaped to East Prussia and hid after the war until captured in Hamburg in May of 1949. Extradited to Poland, tried and sentenced to death in 1959 for war crimes aginast the Poles. Never tried for crimes in Ukraine.

Death sentence never carried out. Common belief was that it was due to him possessing stolen art (hidden at the end of war), including parts of famous Amber Chamber, and therefore his knowledge was of value. There is no proof of that.

He died of natural causes in prison at Barczewo, near Olsztyn, in heart of former East Prussia, which he ruled.
