Ensoniq

Ensoniq Corp. is an American electronics manufacturer, best known throughout the mid 1980s and 1990s for its musical instruments, principally samplers and synthesisers. The company is now part of E-mu Systems Inc..

One of the founders of Ensoniq was Bob Yannes, who had previously designed the SID audio chip of the Commodore 64 home computer, which was considered at the time to be way ahead of all other video gaming console and home computer musical abilities.

Ensoniq first burst onto the scene with the Mirage sampling keyboard in 1985. Previous samplers such as the Fairlight and Emulator were primarily studio machines, and therefore priced way out of the reach of the "musician on the street". But at a price of only $1500, the Mirage was revolutionary.
