Emperor Go-Murakami of Japan
Emperor Go-Murakami (後村上天皇) (1328-1368) was the 97th imperial ruler of Japan. He was named after Emperor Murakami and reigned from 1339 to 1368. Murakami was emperor during a period when there were two rival imperial courts claiming the throne: Murakami's southern court and a northern court which was backed by the Ashikaga shoguns. The Japanese government now officially considers Murakami and his court to have been the true emperors. However, in 1392, Murakami's son, Emperor Go-Kameyama, was defeated and abdicated in favor of the rival claimant, Go-Komatsu, making the northern dynasty the source of the subsequent Japanese monarchs.
