Diplopia is a visual disorder that results in double vision. So when the viewer looks at an object it seems as if there are two objects. It can arise when the eyemuscles are not functioning as intended, and the eyes are not correctly aligned while focussing on an object. This binocular diplopia dissapears when one eye is closed.
Diplopia can also appear in only one eye, this is called Monocular diplopia. Then the multiple vision can be caused by defects in other parts of the vision system such as the lens.
Binocular diplopia can be corrected, to a certain extend, with a prism. Although this correction can be a solution for double vision, it also introduces some chromatic abberations, inextricable bounded to prisms.
