Deshima (出島) is an artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki that was a Dutch trading post from 1641 until 1853. During this period, no foreigners except the Dutch were allowed to trade with Japan, and the Dutch in Japan were not allowed to leave Deshima. A project to restore Deshima is now underway. In modern Japanese the pronounciation would be Dejima, in relation to the Dutch trading post Deshima is the preferred spelling.
