David Stuart (October 24 1378-1402) was the heir to the throne of Scotland and first duke of Rothesay since 1398. He was also earl of Atholl and Carrick.
David Stuart was the son of king Robert III of Scotland and his wife, Annabella Drummond. Due to his father sickness, David was named lieutenant of the kingdom in 1399, a time of civil unrest and conflict with the neighbouring England. His major enemy was his uncle, the experienced Robert, the duke of Albany, who had been protector of the kingdom until then. David was arrested by Albany and put to prison. He died in 1402, in uncertain circumstances, probably by orders of Albany himself. Legend says that he was starved to death. David married Marjorie Douglas, daughter of Archibald earl of Douglas, but had no children and Robert III was succeeded in 1406 by David's younger brother James Stuart.
