Crenel

A crenel (also spelled as crenelle and alternatively known as a carnel, embrasure, loop or wheeler) is an indentation in the battlements of a building. It was most often a feature of defensive buildings, such as city walls or castles, but also became widely used as an ornamental feature.

The word originated in the 15th century from Old French and comes ultimately from the Latin word crena, "notch".
