Credit Suisse is a financial services company based in Switzerland. It was founded in 1856. In 1940, it created its first branch outside of Switzerland, in New York City.In 1988, it gained a controlling stake in The First Boston Corporation, hence its present name.
The company has three operating units as of 2004, the two banks Credit Suisse and Credit Suisse First Boston, and the insurance company Winterthur Group, which it merged with in 1997. Along with traditional banking, it acquired the investment bank Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette (DLJ) of Monkey Business fame.
The company is listed on the SWX Swiss Exchange (stock symbol: CSGN).
