The Cowardly Lion is a character in the Oz books by L. Frank Baum.
The Lion makes his first appearance in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He is the last of the companions that Dorothy befriends on her way to the Emerald City. The Lion joins her so that he can ask the Wizard for courage. Despite his belief that he is a coward, the Lion in fact displays great bravery along the way.
In later books, the Lion often accompanies Dorothy on her adventures, and although he is supposed to be a great coward he save Dorothy many times. His favored companion is the Hungry Tiger.
