According to most modern Biblical critics, this is one of the source documents of the Hebrew Bible. However, Richard Elliott Friedman has recently suggested in his book the hidden book in the Bible that this was in fact written by the Yahwist author, and that the two were originally a single historical epic covering the entire history of the Israelite world until the time of David and Solomon.
