The Continental Bank of Canada was formed when IAC, a financing company, decided to expand the scope of operations in the 1980s. This small bank struggled for several years before being acquired by Lloyd?s Bank of England, and being turned into Lloyd?s Bank of Canada in 1986. After several years of losses, Lloyd?s Bank sold its Canadian operations to the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Corporation, which turned the bank into the Hongkong Bank of Canada in 1990.
