Charles Edward Maurice Spencer is the son of Edward John, 8th Earl Spencer, and his first wife, the former Hon. Frances Ruth Burke Roche (later Shand Kydd). He was divorced from his first wife, (Catherine) Victoria Lockwood, by whom he has four children, including the current Viscount Althorp, Louis Frederick John. Charles, Earl Spencer subsequently married Caroline Hutton Freud, by whom he has a second son, Edmund Charles.
