Charles Schumer



         


Charles Ellis Schumer (born November 23, 1950) is the senior Senator from the state of New York and is a member of the Democratic Party.

Schumer was born in Brooklyn, New York. Schumer served in the New York Assembly from 1974 to 1980. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1980 to 1998. He has served in the United States Senate from 1998 when he defeated incumbent Republican Alfonse D'Amato in a bitter election campaign.

Senator Schumer is the subject of a quip from former United States Senator Bob Dole: "the most dangerous place in Washington is between Charles Schumer and a television camera."

Schumer has gained notoriety among gun owners for coauthoring the Assault Weapons Ban in 1994 with Dianne Feinstein, and he is often criticised for not knowing much about guns.
