Charles Doolittle Walcott



         


Charles Doolittle Walcott (March 31, 1850February 9, 1927) was a American paleontologist.

He served as head of the US Geological Survey and later became Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution after the death of Samuel Pierpont Langley, holding the latter post until his own death.

He has become well-known for his discovery and collection of fossils at the Burgess Shale formation in Canada.
