Charles Bagot

Sir Charles Bagot (1781-1843) was Governor General of the Province of Canada and Lieutenant Governor of Canada West and Canada East (1841-1843). He negotiated the Rush-Bagot Convention to limit arms along the U.S.-Canada border. He was ordered by the British government to resist the demand for responsible government. Bagot did allow Robert Baldwin and Sir Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine to form a ministry on the basis of their parliamentary majority.
