Chain gang

A chain gang was a group of prisoners who were chained together (presumbably to make escape more difficult) while they performed a menial task, such as chipping stone. Although chain gangs are rare today, they still exist. The term is sometimes applied to a clique or a group of people which seem joined together as one. It was also the name of a song.
