Chatten (Catti), a German tribe settled in the area of modern-day northern Hesse. Ancestors of the Hessians. Allied with the Cheruskers (Cherusci)and other northern German tribes under Hermann (Arminius) in their resistance against Roman attempts to conquer northern Germany, culminating in Hermann's defeat and annihilation of three Roman legions under Varus in 9 AD in the battle of Teutoburger Wald.
