Casper

Casper the Friendly Ghost is the main character of the cartoon of the same name, which originated with a 1945 short from Paramount. Starting from the early 50's Casper became a popular comic-book character from Harvey Publications.

As his name indicates, he is a ghost, but is quite friendly. He tends not to frighten children.

Casper has also been the main character in a feature film.
