Created in 1966, it is a group of 87 cities and towns around Lille, in northern France, with almost 1.1 million inhabitants (in 1999). Area: 612 km².
Its goal is to build a better metropole by synchronizing the health system, transport system, environmental actions, etc.
This institution is presided by Pierre Mauroy.
It was formerly called C.U.D.L., which stands for Communauté Urbaine De Lille.
