Butterfree is a fictional Pokémon character. The name is Batafurii in Romaji Japanese and is a Stage 2 bug-type Pokémon that evolves from Metapod at level 10. Butterfree's wings are covered with poisonous, water-repellent dust; this allows it to fly when it rains, and also enables it to attack enemies by flapping its wings at high speeds to release the poisonous powder. Butterfree survives by collecting honey from flowers, which it carries on the hairs on its legs, and it has the ability to identify even distant flowers in bloom.
Butterfree is very useful because it not only can learn psychic-type attacks, but it also learns how to do a large ammount of status-effect powders (I.E.: Sleep Powder, Poison Powder). This is also reflected in the anime because its what Ash Ketchum most often used his Butterfree for.
Ash released his Butterfree after it fell in love with a shiny Butterfree.
Butterfree's name is a combination of "Butterfly" and "Free." The translation of its Japanese name, Batafurii, has the same origin.
In Pokémon Red/Blue and Yellow, Butterfree must be obtained by evolving Metapod. In Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, can also be found in the National Park. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Butterfree is not available at all.
Butterfree also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap.
Butterfree is vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Electric, Ice and - in Pokémon Red/Blue - Poison, and strong against Grass, Ground, Bug and Fighting.
