Buru (or Pulau Buru) is an island in the Maluku province of Indonesia. It is located west of Ambon and Seram . The chief port/town is Gunung Tomahu, 2,428 m (7,965 ft)
Buru mainly consists of mountains covered with forests, with a flat coastal plain where most of its approx 100,000 inhabitants live. Ebony, teak, sago, and coconuts are important products.
The island was occupied by the Dutch in 1683, and it became a part of Indonesia in 1950. A large detention camp for alleged communists was built here after the alleged coup attempt of October 1965 which led to General Suharto taking power.
