The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is a law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice. Its unique responsibilities include protecting the public and reducing violent crime. ATF enforces federal laws and regulations relating to alcohol and tobacco diversion, firearms, explosives, and arson.
ATF is the part of the former Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms moved into the Justice Department from the Treasury Department by the Homeland Security Act of 2002.
