Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A. is an album by Bruce Springsteen, released in 1984 (see 1984 in music). In contrast to his previous album, the critical favorite Nebraska, Born in the U.S.A. featured anthemic, bombastic songs more similar to his earlier material, before his breakthrough with Born to Run.
The title track, "Born in the U.S.A." is one of Springsteen's more well-known songs. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a patriotic song; it is a song of protest telling how Vietnam veterans were looked down upon by the public after returning home from the war.
This has not stopped politicians (such as Ronald Reagan) from attempting to use it as a campaign theme song. Springsteen has never given permission to do so.
The popular song "My Hometown" is a loosely autobiographical tale about a young man living in southern New Jersey, in an semi-urban wasteland riddled with racial tension, crumbling buildings and degenerate neighborhoods.
