The Boredoms are a Japanese noise rock band formed in 1986. They have had a fair amount of success in Japan, but only fleeting popularity in the United States where their style of music is less popular. However, members of Sonic Youth and Nirvana were fans of the band, and they played on the Lollapolooza tour in 1995.
Boredoms have a vast and sometimes confusing discography. Many band members have rotated through the group over the years, often using a number of various stage names.
Having gained much notice in the west after opening for Nirvana for eight consecutive shows in late October and early November of 1993. Two members, Yamatsuka Eye and Yamamoto Seichii, formed a collaboration with Yamazaki Maso of Masonna calling themselves "Triple Yama's."
As of the late 90's, Yamamoto-san has left Boredoms and spends much of his time leading the somewhat similar, trance-inducing Rovo. The remaining members of Boredoms -- Yamatsuka Eye (AKA Yamantaka Eye and Yamataka Eye), Yoshimi P-We, E-Da and ATR carry on the legacy of Boredoms under the aliases of 7VO7 and Vooredoms, whose performances are generally rooted around 3 drummers and Eye's electronic manipulations. The new line up has been featured at the Spring 2004 All Tomorrow's Parties Festival. They have also recently collaborated with Ween to make an album, entitled Z-Rock Hawaii.
It is also to be noted that Yamatsuka Eye has changed his name three times, from Yamatsuka Eye, to Yamantaka Eye, to Yamataka Eye. He also founded the noise band Hanatarash in the 1980s.
