Boogaloo refers to a type of Latin music and dance that was very popular in the United States in the late 1960s. The Boogaloo style originated in New York City among the Cuban and Puerto Rican immigrant population and fused mambo with rhythm and blues. Boogaloo entered the mainstream through the American Bandstand television programme.
The Boogaloo dance was loose and interpretive in style. Early Boogaloo used a twelve-step sequence that was later sped up into a thirty-step sequence. It is to be distinguished from the Electric Booglaloo.
Popular Boogaloo musicians included James Brown, Pete Rodriguez, Richie Ray, Joe Cuba and Bobby Cruz.
