Bolton is a metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England. It has a population of about 260,000 which makes it one of the largest non-cities in the United Kingdom. It is governed by a unitary authority.

The borough of Bolton covers Bolton, as well as nearby places such as Kearsley, Farnworth, Horwich, Blackrod, Little Lever, Westhoughton and Bradshaw.

The current borough was formed on April 1, 1974, by the merger of the old county borough of Bolton, the borough of Farnworth, the urban districts of Blackrod, Horwich, Kearsley, Little Lever, and Westhoughton, as well as part of Turton urban district.
