Berkel

The Berkel river is a tributary of the IJssel river in the Netherlands, springing in Billerbeck, near the city of Münster, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, crossing the border with the Netherlands near Rekken and flowing through Gelderland to join the IJssel at Zutphen after about 110 kilometers.

Before the advent of railroad it was a shipping route for goods to and from Münster, used by flat-bottomed boats. In the 1950's the Dutch stretch of the river was canalised to improve drainage.
