Berbera is capital of Saaxil. Berbera is seaport in Somaliland, with the only sheltered harbour on the south side of the Gulf of Aden; population (2000) 300,000. It is in a strategic position on the oil route and has a deep-sea port, completed in 1969. The port, which was the capital of British Somaliland until 1941, is the terminus of roads from Hargeysa and Buro, and an airport now adds to its accessibility. Berbera exports sheep, gum arabic, frankincense, and myrrh. Its seaborne trade is chiefly with Aden which lies in Yemen 240 km/150 mi to the north.
