municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. The municipality comprises the towns of Alsemberg, Beersel proper, Dworp, Huizingen and Lot. On January 1st, 2000 Beersel had a total population of 22,880 (11,245 males and 11,635 females). The total area is 30.53 km² which gives a population density of 749.43 inhabitants per km².
Beersel is perhaps most famous for the "Kasteel van Beersel" or Beersel Castle, built between 1300 and 1310 by Jan II, the Duke of Brabant, as a defense for Brussels. They also manufacture a form of cheese own called Beersel's Basket Cheese and their own beer named, of course, Beersel.
