The Yeomen Warders of the Tower of London have been nicknamed Beefeaters since 1669, if not earlier, when Count Cosimo, grand duke of Tuscany, visited the Tower and commented on their well-fed appearance. The word beef-eater is recorded from earlier in the 17th century, when it meant "well-fed servant".
The term "beefeater" is also used to refer to the traditional headgear of the Beefeater.
Beefeater gin is also a brand of gin produced in the U.K..
