Battle of Preston (1715)

See Battle of Preston (1648) for the battle of the English Civil Wars.

The Battle of Preston (November 14 1715), was fought during the 3rd Jacobite Rebellion. The battle has the distinction of being the last fought on English (as opposed to British) soil.

The Jacobites moved south into England without opposition, and by the time they reached Preson in Lancashire had grown to about 4,000 in number. General Wills was ordered to halt their advance, and left Manchester on November 11 with 6 regiments. The forces clashed at Preston on November 14, where the Jacobites had barricaded the major roads.

The Jacobites eventually surrendered and 1,468 were taken prisoner, 463 of them English. George Seton, 5th Earl of Wintoun, William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale and James Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater were among those captured and sentenced to be executed for treason under an act of attainder. Seton and Maxwell escaped from the Tower of London.

17 Jacobites were killed and 25 wounded, and around 200 royalist troops killed or wounded.
