Battle of Belgrade (1456)



         


In the summer of 1456 the forces of Hungary lead by János (John ) Hunyadi and Saint János (John) of Capistrano, a Franciscan monk, who had succeeded in raising an army of crusaders composed of Hungarian peasants,raise Mehmed II's Siege of Nándorfehérvár.[ Nándorfehérvár is an old Hungarian name for Belgrade.]

Pope Callixtus III orders the noon bell to commemorate the victory, that stopped the Ottoman Turkish advance towards Europe.The noon bell is still rung to this day.
