Biography

Although a quiet and withdrawn child, Hershey's early roles saw her typecast as a wild child. Her debut was guest starring in three episodes of Gidget in 1965, which she followed up with roles in the television series The Monroes (1966) and the Doris Day film With Six You Get Eggroll. She was soon cast in stereotyped roles as the wild one, and did her best to live up to that. For most of the 1970s she lived with David Carradine, during which time she changed her name to Barbara Seagull, and had a child named Free.

Although her career quickly declined, it was invigorated in 1980. Returning to her real name, and with a willingness to tackle versatile roles, she scored a lead role in a miniseries remake of From Here To Eternity which was followed by her role as an actress on the edge in The Stunt Man. Roles to follow included appearances in The Natural (1984), Hoosiers (1986), her BAFTA award nominated role in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Tin Men (1987), a turn as Mary Magdalene in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) - for which she received a Golden Globe nomination, and possibly her most memorable role as Hillary Whitney Essex in Beaches (1988), alongside Bette Midler.

The Cannes Film Festival twice awarded her Best Actress - for Shy People (1987) and A World Apart (1988) - and her performance as a murderer in the television film Killing in a Small Town (1990), saw her win both an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Throughout the 1990s she stayed visible, although turning down conventional leading-lady roles in favour of challenging ones, appearing in such films as Splitting Heirs (1993), Last of the Dogmen (1995), The Pallbearer (1996), The Portrait of a Lady (for which she received an Academy Award nomination), and A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries (1998).

In 1999, she joined the cast of TV series Chicago Hope as Dr. Francesca Alberghetti. However, at the end of the season the show was cancelled. Her performance in the 2001 Australian film Lantana - possibly the biggest Australian film of the year - earned her the Best Actress Award at the If Awards which she shared with four fellow cast members.

2002 saw Hershey in a miniseries adaptation of George Eliot's Daniel Deronda.

In September 2004, Hershey will be back on television screens playing Genie Carver in The WB's new series The Mountain. Hershey will star alongside Oliver Hudson and Mitch Pileggi.
