Banaba Island (also Ocean Island) is an island in the Pacific Ocean, west of the Gilbert Island chain and east of Nauru. It is part of the Republic of Kiribati.
The island was mined for phosphate from 1900 to 1979. In the course of the mining, a large portion of the island's surface as stripped away. Most of the population of the island was relocated to Rabi Island, Fiji in 1947, but some have returned since the end of mining.
