Azimuth

Azimuth is the angle of an object around the horizon (measured from the North point, toward the East). It is usually measured in degrees.

North 0° or 360°
East 90°
South 180°
West 270°

In the horizontal coordinate system azimuth is one of the two coordinates. The other is altitude.

In celestial navigation, the position of a celestial body is described by its azimuth and elevation above the horizon. In radio astronomy azimuth refers to the position that an antenna must be pointed to receive a satellite signal (compass direction). In aviation azimuth is used to determine headings or the direction in which to fly. The angular distance is measured in a clockwise direction.
