AY-3-8912

A Programmable Sound Generator (PSG) chip manufactured by General Instruments, used in various 1980s home microcomputers including the Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128, the Timex Sinclair TS2068 and the Amstrad CPC 464, 664 and 6128.

It provided three-voice ADSR sound and a single noise channel, plus a single I/O port, used in the Amstrad machines for the interface to the keyboard and in the Spectrum 128 for communicating with the optional external numeric keypad.

Related PSG devices include the AY-3-8910, with two I/O ports, and the AY-3-8913, which had none. Devices from the family also appeared in the BBC Micro, MSX, as well as the Mattel Intellivision and Vectrex games consoles.

Yamaha also produced a clone of the AY-3-8910 called the YM 2149F, which was used in the Atari ST line of computers.
