Auckland is a region in New Zealand. It borders the Northland region to the north and the Waikato region to the south. It is by far the most populous region in New Zealand, with a population of 1,299,000 (2003 estimate). The Auckland Region has four of the five largest cities in New Zealand (Auckland City, Manukau City, North Shore City, and Waitakere City) although most people both in and outside of the region consider these four cities to be just the one metropolitan city named Auckland.

In land area Auckland is the second smallest region after Nelson.
