Atenolol

Atenolol is a drug belonging to the group of beta blockers, a class of drugs used primarily in cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, coronary heart disease, arrhythmias).

Its chemical structure is C14H22N2O3 while its chemical name is (RS)-4-(2-hydroxy-3-isopropylaminopropoxy)phenylacetamide.

Atenolol is a commonly used drug in hypertension. It is also used in other conditions including anxiety and hyperthyroidism. It should only be used with caution with people with known asthma.

Unlike most other commonly used beta blockers, atenolol is excreted almost exclusively by the kidneys. This makes it attractive for use in individuals with end-stage liver disease.
