The Battle of Assaye took place on September 23, 1803, during the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
General Sir Arthur Wellesley with 4,500 British and Indian troops, routed the army of Sindhia of Gwalior, which was over 30,00 strong. All of the camp equipment and 100 guns were taken. Wellington always considered this the bloodiest action, for the numbers engaged, that he ever fought. The British loss amounted to 1,566, or more than one-third of Wellesley's entire force.
