Ashtadhyayi



         


"The Ashtadhyayi" is a Sanskrit text and one of the first works on descriptive linguistics. It was written circa 400 BC by the Indian grammarian Panini, and it describes the grammar of Sanskrit completely. Its mathematical structure has been compared to that of the Turing machine.

It is still used today in the teaching of Sanskrit.

It has 3,995 language rules but also covers historical, social, and geographical subjects.
