Ashokan Farewell

Ashokan Farewell is the name of the title theme song composed for the television miniseries The Civil War which aired on PBS in 1990. Composed by Jay Ungar in 1982 in the style of a Scottish lament or Irish Air, the song is the only contemporary song used for the soundtrack; all other music in the show was authentic 19th century music. Ashokan Farewell has become so popular that people frequently and erroneously believe it was written and performed during the Civil War.

The song is named for the Ashokan Field Campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz, where Ungar held a series of music camps during the summers.
