Arthur J. Goldberg

Arthur Joseph Goldberg (August 8, 1908 - January 19, 1990) was an American statesman. He served the country as the United States Secretary of Labor, United States Supreme Court Justice, and United States Ambassador to the United Nations.

In 1931 he married Dorothy Kurgans. They had one daughter Barbara (Cramer) and a son, Robert.

He served as a labor lawyer, until President Kennedy appointed him as his Secretary of Labor, where he served from 1961-1962 and then to the Supreme Court to replace Felix Frankfurter.

In 1965, he was persuaded by President Johnson to resign his seat on the court to replace Adlai Stevenson as the US Ambassador to the United Nations. Goldberg has said he agreed in the hope of stopping the Vietnam War. President Johnson appointed Abe Fortas to the Supreme Court in his place.

In 1970, he ran for Governor of New York, but was defeated by Nelson Rockefeller. He was also President of the American Jewish Committee, a human rights organization.

He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
