Army of the Tennessee



         


Union Army of the Tennessee was formed in October, 1862 and commanded by Ulysses S. Grant in the siege of Vicksburg. After Grant was promoted, William T. Sherman was given command.

The Union Army of Tennessee was known as "Army of the Tennessee," while its Confederate counterpart was known as the "Army of Tennessee". Union armies were named after rivers while Confederate armies was named after states.
