Army Group North



         


Germany used three army groups to invade the Soviet Union in 1941 (World War II, Operation Barbarossa): army group north, army group center and army group south.

The aim of army group north in 1941 was to conquer the Baltic states and Leningrad. It achieved the first aim but failed to take the second. However, the German forces succeeded in besieging Leningrad until 1944, when the city was liberated by Soviet forces.
