pharmacist — a medical professional who dispenses materia medica to physicians, surgeons and patients.

The word apothecary specifically designates a person who prepared medicine (such as tablets and syrups) himself, rather than just delivering ready-made medicine. In the 17th or 18th century, apothecaries also administered some medicines (such as clysters) themselves.
