Anchor Bible Series
New English Translation

The Anchor Bible Series is a scholarly and commercial co-venture that has been setting a high standard during the decades during which its individual volumes have appeared. Each volume covers a single book of the Tanakh or the New Testament comprising in-depth introductions and commentaries, complemented by original translations, with full critical notes that include alternate readings and alternative translations. Synopses of informed discussion of the historical origins and the manuscripts traditions are also provided. These volumes are not designed for the casual Bible reader, but for the educated layman who is already prepared with a general understanding of and interest in modern biblical scholarship.

The broad range of scholars invited to contribute has kept the Anchor Bible Series from an enthusiastic reception by any particular sect or denomination.

The series is complemented by the Anchor Bible Dictionary, a comprehensive collection of scholarly articles on biblical studies that is a rival to The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible (1962). Both of these multi-volume dictionaries are the equivalent of condensed encyclopedias.

The series began under the guidance of William Foxwell Albright (1871-1971), as General Editor. The current General Editor of the series is David Noel Freedman. One drawback is that not all the earlier volumes remain in print, and the selection from Apocryphal writings includes only deuterocanonical books, not including even the Gospel of Thomas.
