The style of metal known as "doom/death" (an hybrid of doom metal and death metal) is generally acknowledged to have been popularized in the early nineties by three British bands, these being Anathema, Paradise Lost, and My Dying Bride. While Paradise Lost has strayed pretty much completely away from doomdeath, and My Dying Bride staying close to that style, Anathema has taken a path somewhat in the middle, broadening and maturing, but still with a dark, non-mainstream sound, though they no longer employ death vocals.
