All Hallows by-the-Tower
The oldest church in the City of London, All Hallows by-the-Tower is situated next to the Tower of London. It was founded by the Saxon abbey of Barking in 675. The blitz during WWII destroyed all but the walls and the tower. A Roman pavement together with many artifacts, was discovered many feet below the church in 1926. The church has dealt with numerous beheaded bodies, including those of Thomas More, John Fisher and William, Archbishop Laud. William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, was baptised in the church and educated in the schoolroom (now the Parish Room). John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the USA, was married in All Hallows in 1797.
