Aktobe is the capital of the Aktobe Oblysy in Kazakhstan. during the Soviet Regime its name was Aktubinsk. The name "Aktobe" comes from the Kazakh "akt" for "white" and "tobe" for "mountain" because when Aktobe was first settled it is said that the people could see white mountains far in the distance to the north.
